A couple of days ago, my daughter asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks: “What does gay mean, Daddy?”
In that moment, I knew there was only one right answer: “I am so glad you asked. Let’s talk about it.”
In our conversation, I emphasized the importance of curiosity and understanding. When our children ask us questions, especially those that might seem complex or uncomfortable, it’s crucial to take the time to engage with them meaningfully. Here’s a snapshot of our talk:
My Daughter: “What does gay mean?” Me: “Gay means when a person loves another person of the same sex.”
From there, our conversation flowed naturally into what sex means, the importance of consent, and the diversity of human experiences. We discussed how love isn’t confined by gender and how everyone deserves to be who they are and love who they love.
